Using Private or Incognito Windows
Most browsers offer a mode that does not save your history once the window is closed. Depending on your browser, this may be called Incognito Mode, Private Browsing, or InPrivate Browsing.
This is helpful, but if someone else has access to your device, you may prefer using a computer at a library, workplace, or trusted friend’s home for additional safety.
Chrome - Incognito Mode
Incognito Mode doesn’t save your browsing history, form entries, cookies, or site data. Downloads and bookmarks remain on your device.
To open an Incognito window:
Menu → New Incognito Window
Or press Ctrl + Shift + N
Safari - Private Browsing
Safari’s Private Browsing prevents history, form data, and temporary files from being stored.
To open a Private Window:
File → New Private Window
Internet Explorer - InPrivate Browsing
InPrivate Browsing hides your history and also disables toolbars and extensions.
To start:
Settings → Safety → InPrivate Browsing
Or press Ctrl + Shift + P
Microsoft Edge - InPrivate Browsing
To open an InPrivate window:
Menu → New InPrivate window
Or right-click the Edge icon on your taskbar
Shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + N
Firefox - Private Browsing
Firefox provides strong tracking protection in its Private Browsing mode.
To open:
